Thundercat Announces New Album "Distracted" and Shares Lead Single
Thundercat ends a six-year hiatus with his fifth studio album, Distracted, dropping April 3 via Brainfeeder. Produced by Greg Kurstin and Flying Lotus, the 15-track LP features Lil Yachty, A$AP Rocky, and a poignant unreleased collaboration with Mac Miller titled "She Knows Too Much."
Wait, Thundercat hasn't dropped a new album since 2020? That can't be right. At least, that's what I thought until I looked it up. From appearances on Saturday Night Live with A$AP Rocky to appearing on albums with Kehlani and Silk Sonic, it's easy to forget that nearly six years have passed since It Is What It Is dropped, but that will change very soon.
On Thursday, January 29, 2026, Thundercat announced that his fifth studio album, Distracted, will be released on Friday, April 3, 2026, through Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder Records. The 15-track project will feature production from Greg Kurstin, Kenny Beats, Flying Lotus, the Lemon Twigs, and of course, Thundercat. He's also collected features from Tame Impala, A$AP Rocky, Lil' Yachty, Channel Tres, Willow and the late Mac Miller.
The album is led by "I Did This To Myself" featuring Lil' Yachty. It's easy to get lost in the lush groove of the single and lose sight of the frustration both artists express lyrically. Thundercat and Lil' Yachty are both annoyed that they've tried to give their attention and time to someone who doesn't care, but would likely do it all over again because she's bad b—h.
"Got me looking like a fool, just to get some of your attention/Girl, what I gotta do?" Thundercat asks rhetorically. "Girl, you look annoyed/Like you've already had enough/Do I remind you of your ex?"
"I Did This To Myself" sets up for an album that is both playful and serious. Building on the themes of It Is What It Is, the GRAMMY Award winner will explore grief and loss with his new project. From more humorous songs like the lead single to more emotional endeavors, like sharing an unreleased song with his late friend, Mac Miller, Distracted takes on the concept of grief at both the macro and micro levels.
